On Sat., Jan. 17, the Newport girls’ wrestling squad participated in the Lady Seal Duals at Selinsgrove Area High School. This dual tournament would gear the team up for three more dual tournaments in the near future.
Newport’s first dual was at 10:00 AM against Berks Catholic. Here, Newport defeated the Saints 36-12, racking up four pins. Addison Crowell and Peyton Eisenhart also won through Berks Catholic forfeits.
Next, the Lady Buffaloes battled Spring Grove Area later at 11:00 AM. The Lady Rockets defeated the Buffaloes 42-30, though Leila Miller, Carli Stauffer, Madison Kell, Eisenhart, and Crowell all won by pins and forfeits.
Then, at noon, Newport stomped the Eagles of Line Mountain, 48-12. Addison Otstott won in this dual alongside Kaylee Crockett, who pinned her opponent late at 3:28. Sophia Imler ended her match in dramatic style, pinning Reese Kieffer at 10:14.
A duel against Mifflinburg Area would follow, where Newport would come up short just by a point, 36-37. The girls who won: Kell, Stauffer, Barr, Crockett, Crowell, and Eisenhart, all won by pinning a Lady Wildcat. The match ended in a tie; however, Mifflinburg took the extra point at the culmination of the match based on forfeit criteria, as they had three, whereas Newport had only one.
Later, the Lady Buffaloes fell to Boiling Springs, 24-54. Stauffer, Crockett, Crowell, and Eisnehart all won by pins. Despite the fall, Barr wrangled her opponent into the fifth minute for a late match.
Lastly, Newport ended the tournament closely against Elizabethtown Area, 30-36. Kell, Crowell, and Eishart all won by way of Elizabethtown forfeit, but Crockett and Miller both picked up late pins in the fourth minute of their matches, respectively.
