The Newport girls’ and boys’ basketball programs teamed up with the Varsity Club and Four Diamonds Foundation to hold an extravagant fundraising event. Both teams faced Covenant Christian Academy in a doubleheader for a cause: childhood cancer.
The Varsity Club arranged several donated raffle baskets, a half-time frisbee toss, and a half-court shot competition. They also sold extra whoopie pies from a recent fundraiser. The girls’ basketball team also used the night to recognize the youth elementary program as well as their seniors, Jordin Briggs and Korimae Reisinger.
Also, the club invited the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association to sell the Farmshow milkshakes.
In the first game of the night, the Lady Buffaloes battled the Lady Falcons. Sophomore Eliza Benner led the offense with twelve points herself alongside Reisinger, junior Gabby Benner, and sophomore Jillian Zerbe who each had six points. E. Benner also led the team with eleven total rebounds and two steals
Briggs also totaled six assists on the night. Reisinger swiped six steals against Covenant Christian. Close at the end of the fourth quarter, Newport fell 34-37.

In the boys’ game, the Buffaloes soared past Covenant Christian to a 61-29 win. With junior captain Landon Zaring out on injury, all players stepped up to strive for success.
Sophomore John Mayeresky totaled seventeen points, ten rebounds, and four assists. Junior Mason Bitting scored thirteen points with five additional assists. Sophomore Joey Sanders trailed behind him with ten points, including being 3-7 on three-point field goals.
Other players such as freshmen Logan Bates and Lucas Zaring and juniors Henry Barlup and Landon Cigic also tallied points. Freshman Jakob Wolfe posted his first points in the varsity book with two back-to-back layups.
