Every year during the first Saturday of November, Perry County streets are bedecked in red, white, and blue to acknowledge our veterans. Since 1961, viewers from Duncannon to Landisburg have come to wave flags and see the sights. The host town cycles from year to year, and with it travel many notable performers.
This year’s Nov. 1 display in Marysville featured the Shriners, all local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, fire response vehicles, horses, and various veterans organizations. The marching band from each of the four area schools – West Perry, Susquenita, Greenwood, and Newport – led a section of parade participants.
The Newport band led the fourth and final parade division. “Everyone was ready to step off on that windy morning,” says junior Kaylee Arney, clarinet section leader in the band, “ready to play and honor our veterans.” Despite the wind often disturbing their sheet music, the band showed their support by playing “Armed Forces Salute” in recognition of the veterans.
