The golf season was a rocky start; the matches were slow, and the scores weren’t so great. However, the team stayed positive and worked harder in order to achieve their goals. The first match took place at Mountain View Country Club on Aug. 13th. It was against Saint Joseph’s, East Juniata, and Millersburg. The team did not perform well, placing last out of the teams, but there was only growth awaiting them in the next few matches.
The next match took place at Lost Creek Golf Course on August 20th. Against the same teams, Newport dropped its score considerably by 30 strokes from their total of 435. Senior Nathanael Stuck claims, “That day I was playing the best golf I’ve ever played.” Stuck scored 78 from the 18 holes.
After that, the team moved to Lykens Valley Golf Course on August 27th. The team stayed consistent with their score only increasing by 2 strokes. Stuck states on the match saying, “The team performed consistent… I had major hopes of prosperity.” The next match was the best Newport had ever performed. The match took place on September 3rd at the American Legion Golf Course, which is Newport’s home course. Newport dropped their score by 41 points from their season best of 435, scoring 394 strokes. Throughout the season, Newport participated in many exhibition matches that were not scored.
Overall, the team’s season record was 0-4, but all of the players improved greatly. Stuck qualified for districts and tied for third in the league power rankings. The rest of the players also placed well in the rankings. Districts took place on Oct. 11 at Honeyrun Golf Club in York, PA. The match was labeled as disappointing, as Stuck said, “I didn’t do my best out there.” Unfortunately, he scored a higher number of strokes than his usual amount. Despite the district match, the golf season was a success and is only on the rise for the next chapter.
