Newport High School’s Innovation had many events this winter, from singing in Millerstown Park to singing in nursing homes.
To start the month of December, Innovation went to the Millerstown Park festival to sing songs including A Winter’s Night, Seasons Greetings, and What Child is This/Peace on Earth. Later that afternoon on Dec. 7, Innovation, Minivation, and the elementary chorus sang in Newport Square for the annual Newport Tree Lighting.
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 7 pm, the elementary, middle, and high school choirs sang at their Winter Choral Concert along with Innovation and Minivation. Innovation sang The Bells of Christmas Medley and danced to Getting in the Mood for Christmas. The group wore their ugly Christmas sweaters and festive winter clothes for the song and dance.
Sophomore Sophia Griffin, a member of Innovation, explained, “My favorite part about the songs and singing this winter would be people in the group getting to hear all the different voices and how we all blend together is such a cool thing to witness and to be a part of.”
On Dec. 20, Innovation went to nursing homes during the school day to sing their choir songs for the elderly. The next day, on Dec. 21, they left again to sing in their fun Christmas attire to three more nursing homes, including Perry Village. Later that night, innovation sang some of their songs at the Little Buffalo lights. This is where Little Buffalo State Park features various lights and decorations for the Christmas season. People can walk through and look at the lights, visit Santa, get hot chocolate and hotdogs, stand around the fire, and listen to the performances of the Newport Chorus students.
Griffin continues, “My favorite place to sing during the winter with Innovation would probably be Little Buffalo. I think I like this place the most because of all the other schools being along. I like to see and hang out with the middle and elementary school chorus and get to hear their songs.”
With the Christmas season for the singing group now over, they will soon start with their Spring festival songs to sing in Boston, Massachusetts, for their annual Innovation trip.
At this year’s spring concert in May, the Innovation, Minivation, high school, middle school, and elementary choirs will perform various songs.
