On Feb. 28, Newport High School held its annual Sophomore Tea, a long-standing tradition that brings students together for a night of celebration and community. This year’s theme, “Starry Night,” was inspired by the artwork of Vincent van Gogh and featured themed decorations. A group of sophomores planned the event, including Eliza Benner, Logan Cigic, Sophia Imler, Alivia James, Kellen Shepley, Hailey Turner, Shelby Wagner and Addison Whisler. They worked on decorations, food, and organizing the dance to make the night special.

The Sophomore Tea is an important tradition at Newport; it is a way for the sophomore class to honor the seniors. During the dance, students had fun listening to music like “The Cupid Shuffle” and “Cotton Eye Joe.” One of the most popular parts of the night was the chocolate fountain, where students could dip strawberries and pretzels.
Even though the night was fun, not many students attended. Mrs. Briggs said, “It was disheartening to see how few students were in attendance.” Some students complained that the tickets were too expensive at $12/person, and the price was later reduced. Others speculate that the earlier date may have also affected attendance. Even with these challenges, the school plans to continue the Sophomore Tea next year.
