NHS Environmental Club does various volunteer activities with the goal of helping the community and, of course, the environment. This April, they hosted the annual aluminum can recycling event and helped the Conservation District with electronics recycling.
This year’s Aluminum Can Recycling was a disappointing ordeal for the club. Of all the years the club has hosted the event, the least amount of cans were collected on April 11, 2026. Typically, the red dumpster stationed in the high school parking lot would be filled at least halfway, but this year, the back two corners of the dumpster were covered, meagerly. Some theorize that this is in part due to the event’s overlap with Youth Art Day. Regardless of cause, the club has plans to improve turnout in the future. They are currently discussing how to improve advertising, as well as potentially joining it with the Perry County Conservation District’s annual Electronics Recycling.
In stark contrast to this catastrophe, the Electronics Recycling event was a massive success. This was the second year of the event’s post-COVID revival, and turnout was incredible. The line to recycle began almost an hour before the event, and wrapped around the corner. Two trucks were filled with everything from keyboards to exercise equipment. This gives a further boost to the hope of improving the turnout of the aluminum can recycling by combining the two.
