Mr. Jalen Steiner began his teaching career this year shortly after his graduation from Juniata College. Steiner chose teaching because he wanted kids to enjoy math as much as he did when he was little. He also thought getting paid to do his favorite thing was “pretty sweet.”
He insists that his ”strongwill, patience with the kids, and his ability to think quickly on his feet,” will help him teach his middle school students. “Teaching people math is more than just numbers on a piece of paper. It helps students develop problem-solving skills,” he says. Steiner credits his own math education for his current skills. Although he started the year teaching 6th-grade mathematics, he pivoted to 8th grade after Mrs. Cramer’s early retirement mid-year.
Finally, after his long day of work at Newport, he enjoys watching his favorite team, Chelsea Football Club, play soccer, as well as watching the American football team, the Philadelphia Eagles. The go-to math joke that he tells all of his students is “What is tree plus tree plus tree plus three?” It’s 9!
