On Nov. 27, 2025, hundreds of community members gathered at the Newport Ambulance House to participate in the annual Newport Turkey Trot. The event, held each year on Thanksgiving, brings together runners of all ages to celebrate the holiday while staying active. Participants chose from three race distances: one mile, 5k, or 10k.
Despite the cold morning temperatures, runners arrived early and lined up at the starting line, excited and ready to race. Spectators gathered along the route to cheer on participants as they ran through the streets of Newport. Winners of the races included 25-year-old Beno Nuenez in the one-mile run, 39-year-old James Lourenco in the 5k, and 22-year-old Michael Singley in the 10k.
To help runners prepare, donuts were offered before the race began, adding to the friendly and festive atmosphere. After finishing their races, participants were greeted with hot soup at the finish line, which helped many warm up after running in the cold weather.
Newport High School students played an important role in the success of the event. Members of the Newport High School Student Council volunteered their time by selling merchandise, handing out number tags and race shirts, and assisting organizers throughout the morning. Their efforts helped the event run smoothly and supported the community.
Several Newport High School students also participated in the Turkey Trot as runners. Senior Korimae Reisinger shared her experience, mentioning both the enjoyment and challenges of the race. “It was pretty fun, just really cold out,” Reisinger said. “Once I got moving, it wasn’t too bad, but the start was freezing.”
Overall, the Newport Turkey Trot served as a fun and meaningful community event, bringing together students, families, and residents. The race continues to be a holiday tradition that promotes community involvement and healthy activity for people of all ages.
