Newport High School graduate Mr. Jordan Magaro has recently rejoined the Buffaloes as a staff member after spending five years teaching English as a Second Language at Harrisburg High School; he notes, “half a decade sounds cooler.” He now teaches eighth-grade Spanish and provides learning support in high school.
Mr. Magaro attended the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English, English as a Second Language and several graduate school credits. In addition to ESL, Magaro has taught almost every subject as a substitute teacher. He is looking forward to teaching a new subject, spending far less time commuting to and from work, and having fun with his students. “If the teachers aren’t having fun, the kids aren’t gonna enjoy class,” Magaro said.
As a student, Magaro was involved in Student Council, Varsity Club, football, and basketball. After graduating, he took a gap year, which he split between Costa Rica and New Zealand.
Outside of teaching, his favorite things to do are cook, forage for wild food, and build with Legos, but he also says his hobbies are constantly changing. His accomplishments mainly consist of small victories, such as making the perfect pizza. In the future, he hopes to move to Italy with his wife.
