Paityn Warner
Greenwood soccer stayed dominant this season, with a 9-7-3 record there were a few players that stood out this year: Jack Myers and Maddie Warner from Greenwood, and Camden Barrick from Newport.
Greenwood soccer started off their season with a winning record within the first four games. Players held out hope for the rest of the season, and came out with a few victories.
“These past few games have been tough battles, but the team has handled it well. Going 2-1 in the first week of games is a very good start,” attacking midfielder Jack Myers said.
Myers made an extremely positive impact on the Wildcats this year, as he decided to join soccer for his sophomore year.
“He has been both a strong defensive and offensive player and brings a lot of skill to the field,” wing player Warner reports on Myers’ skill. Warner was the only girl on the team, and she walked into the season with a positive attitude. “I think this year will be a huge step up from last year… I don’t think anyone expected us to be better than we were last year, so I think one of our biggest advantages is coming with an element of surprise.”
Greenwood combines with Newport in soccer, and junior Camden Barrick has seen some varsity time. Barrick is a midfielder who also stepped into the season with postseason hopes. “We will be a competitive team in the league, and districts is definitely going to be a possibility.”
The team faced a few weeks of struggle, facing teams like Saint Joseph’s Catholic, Halifax Area, Midd-West, Juniata, Millersburg Area, and Susquenita. They came out of those two weeks with three ties and two losses. Greenwood picked up the intensity with a 4-0 win against East Juniata, soon followed by a 9-0 win against Saint Joseph’s Catholic.
The Wildcats looked to work hard and make history this season with hard-fought battles against tough league opponents. They kept their drive until the last second of the season to finish off 9-7-3.
