Music is an important part of lots of people’s lives. It can distract you from a breakup, block out an annoying person you have to sit next to, and help motivate you to do your chores. In short, music is a popular topic with many people. There’s many different genres of music that many people like and many genres people don’t like. It all depends on a person’s taste; for example, many people can’t stand country music, but it may be someone else’s favorite genre of music. Since Gen-Z has such a scary music taste, I am taking it upon myself to recommend music I personally think is good.
Shut Me Up by Mindless Self Indulgence. Released on Sept. 12, 2006, Shut Me Up peaked in the top 7 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart. Shut Me Up is a fairly repetitive song. For most of the song, “I can’t wait for you to shut me up” plays over and over. But if you’re not into songs that repeat themselves, don’t worry; there’s plenty of songs to come I assure you don’t repeat as often. https://youtu.be/1ZLo8sBOt4A?si=-MgqKt5wAfJc6ZyH
Girl Anachronism by The Dresden Dolls. Released in 2003, Girl Anachronism focuses on the thoughts of being out of place and running out of time. The song has a rather dark theme and was featured in the end credits of season three, episode five of a show called Weeds. https://youtu.be/VGrqcQWRVGE?si=wheRQtgGo-V4nbQ4
Fine, Great by Modern Baseball. Released on Feb. 11, 2014, this song is more relaxed in pace, expressing the singer’s struggles with anxiety and trying to put on a tough facade. The chorus of this solemn song reflects how the singer wishes they could worry about their friends instead of themselves. The overall message is of resilience even with the uncertainty that follows life. https://youtu.be/munEaFvfbnE?si=2tF2W2HvyFV9WJ6H
Deceptacon by Le Tigre. Released on May 28, 2008, by the electronic rock band Le Tigre, this song tackles commercialism and conformity to society. The chorus borrows themes from the hit Musical Grease, specifically from the song We Go Together. The main message of the song is that individuality is possible and that it’s very important to stand up for what you believe in.https://youtu.be/wjNln9mXuTI?si=T81qaQONlzX9luhe
Black Sheep by Metric. Recorded on Aug. 13, 2010 this song was made for the comedy film Scott Pilgrim VS the World. Just because it was made for a comedy doesn’t mean it’s all just nonsense. This song actually holds a deep meaning about loneliness. The song talks of someone who is often pushed away and ignored for their differences from the status quo. The song, however, acts as a way to reassure the person to never give up during hardships.https://youtu.be/8pJZ9dWvxyA?si=nqGhN7m-y3CgxL2E
