The Newport golf team added only three kids to the team at the beginning of the season, meaning they were disqualified from earning team points for the meets. The third to last week of the season, more members joined the team, meaning they were finally able to compete for wins. The team roster of both Newport and Greenwood players is made up of senior Drew Bratton, juniors Matthew Everett and Nathaniel Stuck, and freshmen Tripp Bryson, Corbin Campbell, and Dylan Yohn.
Denny and Peg Tressler coach the team. Nathaniel Stuck, the only member of the team from Newport, says, “They’re good coaches. Denny drives the team around, Peg is more of a swing coach. They try helping out the beginners more than the experienced.”
“We all are trying to improve everyday, and from what I see and from what the coaches see we are all improving,” Stuck said. “I’m not the greatest but I’m trying my best and it’s been showing. Myself and the others are getting better and better each day. A couple of us have a chance of going to districts if we have a good season. Days when there is no practice I’m out practicing my swing and trying to better myself.”
In the Tri-Valley league, there are four other opposing teams. The ending of the season resulted in Newport in last with a 0-24 record. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy was ranked first in the league with a record of 20-4 followed by Millersburg who ended with a 20-4 as well. East Juniata ranked third right above Newport at 17-7. Stuck said, “I think we did pretty well but there are things we need to do to get better. We also need to convince more people to come out and play so we can compete as a team instead of taking the losses.”
