Football is the most popular sport in the United States by a huge margin, with leagues of little kids who can barely throw the ball to forty-year-old professional players who have won world championships. While Newport does not have a girl’s varsity football team, powderpuff brings the sport into the district for one night.
Newport High School held their annual powderpuff games on Oct. 4. Powderpuff is a game of flag football played between two classes. The main difference between powderpuff and regular 7v7 flag football is that the gender roles are reversed; the girls are the players and the guys are the cheerleaders.
The first game was played between the Junior Class of 2025 and the Sophomore Class of 2026. The sophomores looked promising at first, but the juniors were able to defeat them by a large margin. The Senior Class of 2024 played against the Freshman Class of 2027 in the next game. The seniors had a good run, but, due to the lack of players to substitute in, the freshmen came out victorious. In the final game, the juniors convincingly beat the freshman, bringing up a final score of 28-6. The freshmen threw two interceptions and were unable to convert on a much-needed zero-second play.
Student council advisor Mr. Bower was supportive of the game, just as in previous years, but he did have some criticism. “We have to change some things to make it not go as long,” he said. The games held ten-minute halves with five-minute halftimes, lasting around two hours over all three games. Nonetheless, the night went smoothly, and by 9:30 almost everything was cleaned up.
