Saturday Night Live, more commonly known as SNL, is an American late-night live sketch comedy. First debuting on October 11, 1975, SNL has been a staple of American culture. Every Saturday night, 5.3 million people tune in to watch iconic and hilarious skits.
SNL is known for many popular skits that the internet raves about. In recent years, some of their most well-known skits, which people are still talking about, include Domingo, a skit featuring names like Pedro Pascal, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter. Or Washington’s Dream, a skit about the quirks of American culture and language. These skits are just two out of almost 250 skits created and performed by SNL over the past 49 years.
With over 51 seasons in total, SNL has become one of the most-watched and most popular late-night comedy shows. 2024 marked a huge milestone in SNL history, their 50th anniversary. The skits got funnier and even crazier as the writers came up with fresh new skits. Bringing in some very high-profile celebrities to host, including Timothée Chalamet and Scarlett Johansson.
Now the 51st season is about to begin, and SNL has released news of five new members who will be joining the cast. Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, Veronika Slowikowska, and Ben Marshall. Ben Marshall was already a writer for SNL, while the four other cast members will be new additions. Some are known for their funny performances on TikTok or their appearances on other comedy shows. One thing is for sure; they are great new additions to the cast. In recent interviews, the new cast members have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for being part of something as iconic as Saturday Night Live. Veronika Slowikowska, one of the new members, supports this by saying it’s a “dream come true”.
News of these new additions comes shortly after the announcement that the current cast members Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, and Emil Walkim will not be returning for the 51st season. The creator of SNL, Lorne Michaels, says this is gonna be a major shake-up for the show, but fans are excited to see what new potential these cast members will bring to the performances.
When SNL first premiered, it was known as NBC’s Saturday Night, and although it has claimed its fame now, it wasn’t always well-received. After its first release, reporters called it things like “lackluster” and “less than auspicious”. SNL was not an instant hit, but quickly rose to the top and is now a counter-culture phenomenon.
Make sure to tune in Saturday, October 4th, for the premiere of season 51 of SNL and the new cast members, who are sure to bring something new to the table.
