Marching Band heads to Virginia for competition, fun

On Saturday, May 11, the Newport Marching Band took their annual end-of-the-season marching band trip. Like last year, the group went to Virginia, but the band selected King’s Dominion Amusement Park instead of Massanutten Waterpark. Before they went to the park, they performed “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, one of their show tunes from the 2023 marching band season, for a competition. This performance is part of the Music in the Parks competition in which Newport’s chorus usually participates.

Although they haven’t competed for several years, Newport brought home a win with a superior placing and earned first place in their category for parade bands.

After the day of rides and food, the band piled back onto the bus while Ms. Donna Stuller revealed the 2024 marching band show. The show’s theme will be How to Train Your Dragon. Even though the show’s genre is going to be a lot different than last year, it will still be exciting and full of surprises! It’s always interesting to see how different each show can be.

Sophomore Riley Babski says, “I felt we were stronger than last year.”

This show can bring more from the band than other shows did in previous years because they have been evolving and experimenting with their music, leading to new sounds and experiences for the audience.

Marching band director, Ms. Donna Stuller exclaims, “I’m most excited for how excited everyone was when I announced the show theme for this season. I personally love the “How to Train Your Dragon” movie series, and the music is phenomenal! It’s going to be a fun show, and I can’t wait to see our band bring it to life!”

The band individually and all together has improved so much over the past season and have shown their growth throughout the years.
