The famous and beloved Punxsutawney Phil has helped us predict whether there will be six more weeks of winter since 1886. If he sees his shadow, that means winter goes on. If he doesn’t, there will be an early spring. This Groundhog Day, Phil predicted that there would be an early spring.
Unfortunately for fans, this anticipated holiday and beloved animal may not be the same due to the animal activist group PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, pressing Pennsylvania citizens to change the tradition. PETA is a group that helps bring a stop to the abuse of animals in the use of business and society.
PETA seeks to replace Phil with a big, gold coin. PETA claims that the groundhog “is kept at a local library year-round for revenue and attention,” which they claim is inhumane. Realistically speaking, they want to change it to a gold coin because a coin flip has a fifty/fifty chance of prediction each year, and that is presumably the same as the chance that Punxsutawney has of either predicting a late winter or early spring.
PETA announced that another reason for this replacement is that it would, in fact, likely be more accurate. The predictions from Punxsutawney have shown that the groundhog has been correct on the weather only around 40 percent of the time.
Notably, this year’s Groundhog Day still decided to use Punxsutawney Phil as the predicting icon.
