Girls basketball has had a rough season this year. Though they showed both their strengths and weaknesses on the court, they still built themselves up as a team and attempted to work their way to wins.
On Monday, Jan. 8, The girls basketball team lost to Upper Dauphin Area, 21-48. Their next game, on Jan. 10, they lost to York County Tech, 28-50. Then, on Jan. 11, they went on to play Susquenita; with a score of 15-44, Newport took another loss.
On Jan. 23, they had a close game against East Juniata, where they lost 34-41. On Jan. 26, they lost again playing Line Mountain, with a score of 16-56. On Jan. 30th, they lost to Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy with a score of 32-72. On Feb. 2, they lost to the Greenwood Wildcats, 23-36.
On Feb. 5, the team played the Juniata Indians where they lost 23-33. They put up a good fight in this final game of the season and were up in the second quarter, but Juniata came back and won in the second half. Overall, their final record is 2-14. In the Tri-Valley league, the team went 0-11.
The team had troubles throughout the season, but as the year went on they showed significant improvement. They did not secure any wins in the league, but they still worked very hard to get to the next level and further their oneness as a team. Junior Megan Foltz, a player on varsity, says “I feel as though we are getting better each day, and even though our games may not reflect how we feel in that way we are still improving daily.”
The girls have built up their ability to work as a team and have played their hardest to win the games, striving and practicing every day to become an even better team. They are excited to return next season and hopeful that their improvements will earn them a win.
