Last year marked the end of a century-long era of physical Blue & White publications. What was once an enjoyable newspaper to read at the end of the school year has now been transformed into a digital, always-updating website.
The Blue & White was Newport High School’s end-of-the-year newspaper for decades, but its original use was much more simple. Back in the early 1900s, it was a small pamphlet given out at the end of the year with jokes, basic summaries about what happened during the year, and a few pictures of important individuals. Even before that, it was used as a pamphlet that was given out at graduation ceremonies addressing the seniors. While the Blue & White’s time of primary publication is unknown, it is believed to be well over 100 years-old.
Now, the ever-popular newspaper has been transferred to a digital format, able to be updated at a moment’s notice. Members of Newport School District no longer need to wait until May to read quotes given from football players back in October. Updating information on sports, events, or other topics can be done instantly. Furthermore, without a limit to the amount of articles that can fit within twenty pages, there are an infinite number of topics to write about and share.
That’s where you come in, reader! Every year, journalism students write several articles which contain information about current events happening in the school. Sports, dances, retirements, and new teachers are all featured material which allows plenty of room for other topics that don’t have anything to do with school. Since everything is now digital, articles that have information about technology, politics, or anything else can be updated after it is published. There is only one question: where do we start? Below this article is a response box that you can use to give journalism students ideas for articles. Want an article about dinosaurs living in Australia? It will be written!
The journalism staff would like to remind all readers that the website is still under construction, so the layout and writers for each type of article are not finalized. If you find any issues, please email Seth Prosser or Mrs. Stewart.
