Newport baseball had a rewarding season with good wins at home and on the road.
Newport hosted the Christian School of York on Mar. 18 to begin the Buffalo baseball team’s season. The game ended 5-4 in Buffalo’s favor in extra innings.
Over that weekend on Mar. 22, the Perry County Baseball Tournament was held at West Perry. Newport took a tough loss, 0-15, to West Perry in the semifinals, the team they beat last year for the championship title. West Perry would then go on to win the championship this year. Newport’s next game was the consolation tournament game versus Greenwood, which they won, 16-1, over the Wildcats. “… a great way to measure each of the Perry County teams on where we are at performance-wise… I always liked having the PeCo tournament…” senior pitcher Aden Banks added.
Next on the schedule was an away game at Line Mountain on Mar. 26. Newport came out victorious in a shutout, 10-0. Newport returned home to play the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Wolfpack on Mar. 28, which sent them back to Boalsburg with a final score of 12-2.
The team then packed up to play two on-the-road games. Once at Upper Dauphin Area on Mar. 31, Newport came up short, 8-9, against the Trojans, handing them their second loss of the season. The Buffaloes made up for it with their away game at East Juniata on Apr. 4 by dropping the Tigers, 15-4.
The next game in the team’s sights was at Juniata on Apr. 14. They ten-runned the Indians for a final of 11-1. The team’s record is now 6-2.
The final half of the season went by quickly but busily, with many postponements being made.
The team gained a 14-1 win over Saint Joseph’s Catholic, fell to Upper Dauphin Area 1-12, beating Susquenita 4-2, outlasted East Juniata 13-3, fell to Halifax Area 1-11, and finished off the season with two wins against Greenwood; 3-1 and 10-5.
The team earned a spot in the PIAA District III Class AA tournament. They played Camp Hill there in the semifinals and ended their season with a 1-8 loss. The team ended 12-6, signing off senior pitcher Aden Banks.
