Spring has sprung, and with it comes another season of high school softball. This year, the Lady Buffaloes step onto the field with a mixture of veterans and fresh talent, all eager to play.
The Newport Girls’ Softball team is comprised of three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores, and seven freshmen. The seniors, Megan Foltz, Kennedy Ruggles, and Gracyn Shutt, led the team with great morale.
The girls ended their overall season with a record of six wins and eight losses. With all of the discouraging weather this season, the Buffaloes did not get to play many games. However, with the games they played, they scored a total of 127 runs.
Their success this year was very impressive; with all the newcomers and position changes, Coach Melissa Briggs made sure her team was not the same every game. The lineup needed improvement so the team could play the best they could against certain teams. “The team has worked hard this season; next season we will continue to get better,” Coach Briggs reflects.
Junior Korimae Reisinger led the batting lineup until the last few games. She managed to get on base plenty of times and encouraged her team as they followed. This year’s team is in the 6th spot for their district, which unfortunately will not send them to the playoffs. Reisinger states, “We’ve made many improvements this year, being such a young team, but next year we are going to continue to get better and improve [more].”
