On Jan. 29, sophomore Lizzie Hoover won the Poetry Out Loud regional competition for her recitation of “A Song: Lying is an Occupation,” “A Blessing,” and “Across the Bay.”
Hoover won her spot in the school-level competition with the recitation of her three chosen poems. The competition took place on Jan. 9 early in the morning and concluded shortly before the first-period bell.
The regional competition took place at the Incarnation United Church of Christ in Newport. Hoover competed against two other school winners from Juniata and East Juniata high schools. She won overall, advancing her onwards in the event.
The Poetry Out Loud state-level competition will be in the state museum in Harrisburg on Mar. 3. Hoover will compete against the other regional winners to move to the National Finals in Washington, DC. The sophomores in the honors English class will be taking the trip to watch her recitation.
“I feel very surprised that I qualified for the state competition,” said Hoover. “I am very excited for the opportunity.”
If you see Hoover in the hallways or around Newport, make sure to say congratulations and wish her luck at the state competition!
