Homecoming week has finally come to a close after the dance on Oct. 5th. This year, the Homecoming court candidates for King were seniors Cainan Benner, Bryan Schue, and 2024 Homecoming King Matthew Tubioli. Queen candidates were seniors Makenna Buffington, Ciara Ryan, and 2024 Homecoming Queen Payce Smith-Robbins. Attendants included junior Korimae Reisinger, sophomore Gabby Tubioli, and freshman Eliza Benner. Last year’s homecoming queen, Alex Reisinger, could not come back to crown the 2024-2025 homecoming queen, so the 1974 Homecoming queen, Susan Hebel, returned to Newport to do the honors.
Each year on the week of homecoming, the Student Council puts out spirit week themes for each day leading up to the dance. This year, the themes were as follows: Monday-PJ Day, Tuesday- Country or Western, Wednesday- Teacher/Student Swap Day, Thursday- Jersey Day, and Friday- Blue and White Day. A new theme this year took place on Wednesday- Teacher/Student Swap Day. Mr. Barlup and Mr. Barner were the most popular teachers to imitate.
On October 4th, Newport’s Homecoming game was against the Juniata Indians. At the game, Jeeps escorted the attendants and the Homecoming court. Banners and floats were made from each of the classes and clubs. This year, the theme for the floats was “Around the World” with the homecoming dance being Hawaiian luau. The winner for the best float was the freshmen class of 2028, and the best banner went to National Honor Society.
Unfortunately, the 2024 Powderpuff game was postponed to October 16th, much after homecoming week. In Powderpuff, the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will all face each other in girls’ flag football to see who will come out on top. Last year, the class of 2025 won in the winner’s bracket against the class of 2027. In the annual homecoming pep rally, all fall sports were recognized. At the end of the rally, all four grades competed in a “Battle Cry” competition to win the spirit stick. This year, the freshmen class of 2028 won this honor.
This Homecoming week also included a “Battle of the Classes” competition. Some of the activities include dressing to impress with Spirit Week wear, a Buffalo scavenger hunt, penny wars, and battle cry competition.
Many students enjoyed Spirit Week and all the exciting activities that are in store.
Sophomore Kaylee Bell exclaims, “I think pajama day was my favorite [spirt day].”
Freshman Kellen Shepley states he was “extremely excited for this week’s homecoming football game!”
