The Newport girls basketball season is underway. So far this season, the team has competed in PeCo and played multiple league and non-league games.
At PeCo on Dec. 1, they lost against Greenwood with a score of 45-13. The team then lost to Susquenita 41-15 in the consolation game on Dec. 2. The team believes they have room to improve and that these losses have definitely made them better as players themselves, but even better as players playing together; Sophomore Jordin Briggs, a starter on varsity, has a few words of encouragement, “We are definitely getting better, so don’t let these losses dictate the future.”
Briggs also says “If you’re failing, don’t get down on yourself; just keep moving forward.” She believes that showing her support for her team and motivating them during these tough first games will pay off towards the end of the season because of how much they’ll develop as a team.
The team then lost their game to Juniata on Dec. 11 with a score of 19-49. The Buffaloes got their first win of the season on Dec. 13 in their game against Antietam High School, where they put 24 points up against Antietam’s 20.
On Dec. 18, Newport lost to Millersburg as they have in past seasons with a score of 13-49. On Dec. 28, the team slightly changed their course when they won 44-25 against Harford Christian High School.
On Jan. 4, the Buffaloes lost again to Greenwood, 22-60. Ringing in the New Year, the girls basketball team has an overall record of 2-5. However, they are 0-3 against teams in the Tri-Valley League.
Senior Katie Sanders says that she believes that they are working very well together as a team. Sanders says “Overall, we’re competing well every game…considering the loss of our starting lineup from last year.” They are adjusting to being a younger team and trying their best to improve.
