The administration sadly canceled the annual Christmas assembly for the second year in a row. The National Honor Society has the responsibility of hosting the annual Christmas assembly. Last year, a snowstorm prevented students from making it to school in the days leading up to winter break, so the assembly had to be canceled.
This year’s assembly, which was much like the planned one for last year, included fun activities, beginning with a sing-along with Spanish teacher Mr. Craig Betts followed by a Jeopardy game hosted by senior Zachary Bellis. The senior team included Naia Caudle, Mason Messick, Ruben Moreno, and Ryder Wands. The staff team included Mr. Betts, Mr. Gamber, Mrs. Keilman, Mrs. Neidigh, and Mrs. Wagner. Jeopardy was to be followed by a bunch of minute-to-win-it games. A school-wide Christmas Kahoot game was planned next, and a movie voted on by the student body, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, to close the assembly. There were also break-out rooms planned which would allow students to go to a different room to play games or watch a different movie.
The calling-off of the 2023 Christmas assembly resulted from allegations of potential threats to the student body. The state police investigated the threats before the day of the assembly and decided there was no substantiated proof that the threats would occur. Nonetheless, for the safety and security of the student body, the school district decided to cancel the assembly. The school day remained a normal half day, but the assembly did not take place.
This marks two years in a row that the assembly has not occurred, a stroke of bad luck that makes it seem like the production has been put under a curse. Mrs. Briggs, National Honor Society advisor and the coordinator of the event, commented, “Hopefully we can break the Christmas Assembly Curse because it’s a little disheartening that we weren’t allowed to do it this year. Hopefully, the third time’s the charm.”
