Homecoming parade features winning floats, banners

Newport High School’s homecoming spirit week is officially over, leaving behind the dance, the football game, and the annual pre-game parade. This year, the parade took place on Sept. 29 before the Homecoming game.

Newport coordinates this parade each year through the town to display each grade’s floats, club banners, and sports teams. This event brings a large portion of the town to the streets to watch the festivities, root for the teams, and grab the candy that the floats and banners hand out.

This year’s homecoming theme was 80s cartoons. The senior class of 2024 went with Thundercats, the class of 2025 chose Garfield, the class of 2026 went with Scooby Doo, and the winning freshmen class of 2027 opted for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Several clubs and classes participated by making a banner. Some of these include the journalism class’s G.I. Joe, student council’s Tom and Jerry, FFA’s Smurfs, and the winning Middle School Student Council’s The Flintstones.

“I wish the homecoming parade was bigger,” said Student Council advisor Mr. Bower. While more and more classes and clubs participate in the homecoming parade, the event never lasts as long as the Veterans Day parade or the Memorial Day parade. A majority of students are pulled between their extracurriculars and have to choose which one to march within the parade.
