While Greenwood boys soccer’s postseason performance was on par with their regular season efforts, they did not maintain their undefeated record. By the end of the season, the team’s record was 19 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie, the single loss coming from their final game of the season.
Their first playoff game was against Juniata on Oct. 16. It was a spectacular performance by the team and the game finished with a 4-1 score. Their second game was against East Juniata on Oct. 18. This game was a little harder for Greenwood and they struggled to find the net. Still, they persevered and scored the only goal of the game, ending it with a score of 1-0 and a Greenwood win.
Greenwood moved on to their third playoff game; so far they had played to their standards, and they hoped to upkeep their performance in the following game against Delone Catholic on Oct. 25. Greenwood had a shutout in this matchup, ending the game 3-0. Senior Nick Stuck commented that this was a highlight of the season. The game was at home, “which made it special because the last time we had a home District game was during 2020 against Oley Valley which we lost in double overtime,” explains Stuck.
Greenwood played their fourth game against the very well-rounded Kutztown. Greenwood struggled to get anything going, not finding the net once and letting up a goal, ending the game with a 1-0 Kutztown win. Kutztown, who dealt Greenwood its only loss, ended up being the overall district champions. Greenwood finished their postseason as district semi-finalists.
This ended the soccer season for Greenwood with a record of 19-1-1. After this year, most of the team will have graduated, leaving the present juniors, sophomores, and freshmen to lead the team. Junior Evan Rice says “We are going to have big shoes to fill going into next year if we want to make it a successful season.”
Senior Braden Barrick explains, “They need to work extra hard to fill [the seniors’] shoes.” He adds that with many seniors leaving, the underclassmen will need to undertake big roles to maintain their success in later seasons. Greenwood’s 19-1-1 record stands out among their past standings, but Greenwood regularly has many wins and few losses. For next season, the up-and-coming generation has a strong reputation to live up to.
