Mrs. Shelly Milbrand-Smith became the new high school counselor, finally taking a spot in the faculty that had been vacant for six months.
Milbrand received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Chaminade University of Honolulu before attending Shippensburg University to get a Master’s in school counseling. She is currently enrolled at Eastern University to pursue a PhD in organizational leadership in education.
Milbrand started her career as a drug and alcohol counselor, then became a school counselor. She was employed at Dauphin County Technical School for 15 years as a school counselor before being referred to Newport and joining the staff in December.
Milbrand has five daughters and one son, between the ages of 17 and 26. “It’s been a ride,” she says. “[We’re] a very active, busy family… there’s a lot going on.”
In her free time, Milbrand enjoys hiking, camping, and exploring new places in the outdoors. She also enjoys playing the piano, with classical music being her favorite type to play.
One fun fact she wanted to share was that she is the proud owner of a pot-bellied pig. “I love pigs, and had the opportunity to acquire one…she’s my little sidekick. Not many people like her, but I love her.”
“My job is to support students and staff in meeting the needs of our students,” mentioned Milbrand. “I have an open door policy, so students can come and see me whenever it works in their schedule.”
