Junior Callyn Maxey drives the ball up the side of the field during the JV matchup at Selinsgrove Area
Newport field hockey began its week with a difficult Perry County championship. Falling to Susquenita 1-8 and later to Greenwood in the consolation 0-8, the team still held on.
Throughout the weekend, junior Peyton Eishart found the goal by herself and overtook the Susquenita Blackhawk goalkeeper. “I was so happy when we scored… it made me feel good as a person because I was the only one who scored, but I wish we could have scored way more… giving it 110% all the time,” Eisenhart stated.
Both goalkeepers, freshman Leile Miller and senior Taylor Barr, played during these tournament games and had a combined save count of 18.
Later, on Aug. 27, Newport faced the Lady Seals of Selinsgrove Area. Eisenhart managed a goal for the 1-5 final score. With persistence, Eisenhart made her third shot on goal connect with the back of the goal. “I think that the team worked really hard to get the ball to the offensive circle…” Eisenhart said. Alongside Eisenhart in the upfield, senior Korimae Reisinger found herself taking two shots at the goal herself. Barr held strong for eight saves.
The next day, Aug. 28, the team once again found themselves on the road at Penn Manor this evening. Though the team fell 0-9 to the Lady Comets, Barr blocked 15 shots and held her own by not allowing Penn Manor to score at all in the third quarter. Despite the defeat, the Buffaloes still learned a lesson. “… communication on the field more and working on some more offensive push as well as being more aggressive offensively,” Barr explained.
The most recent game for the Lady Buffaloes was today, Sept. 9 at Susquenita. Information will be featured in the next update.
Also, there have been a series of cancellations and new teams have been added to the Lady Buffalo schedule. Newport picked up a home and away game against Mercersburg Academy on Sept. 17 and Oct. 15 and an away matchup at Waynesboro Area on Oct. 7.
