The Varsity starters huddle prior to the Tri-Valley game.
The Greenwood boys’ soccer team is beginning its season evenly with a record of 2-2. These losses only come from the lack of one goal. The Wildcat offense takes charge to ensure the most possession during a game.
The team began its season with a home match against West Shore Christian on Aug. 25. Senior Dylan Womer found the back of the net twice, once assisted by junior Mason Morgan, and sophomore Nathan Joya had nine saves as the keeper. The Wildcats took a 2-1 victory over the Bobcats at their field.
Greenwood then began Tri-Valley League play with a 4-0 win over the East Juniata Tigers in McAlisterville on Aug. 27. To begin scoring, junior Will Campenni found a header available from a provided kick by junior Jack Myers. Senior Aidan Preston’s pass to Keegan Ross allowed for a crisp, angled kick that stunned the Tiger’s keeper.
Over the second half of the East Juniata game, the Tigers began responding to the Greenwood pressure by being more vocal and overall more aggressive and meaningful with their plays.
Also, freshman Titan Wirth, while pushing high, found a shot on goal assisted by Myers. Lastly, Wirth and Myers collaborated on a goal; this time, Wirth assisted Myers. Both keepers, Joya and freshman Drake Kerstetter, found time on the pitch.
Myers and Campenni, alongside junior Dylan Shipp, certainly show grit in the upfield and a desire to score. The three, when pushing together, strive for the ball and pass smartly amongst each other to outsmart the opposite team’s defense.
Next, Greenwood took on non-league opponent Lancaster County Christian for a mere 1-2 fall in overtime. Campenni, with the help of Myers, knocked the ball in for a single Wildcat goal. Joya had seven saves on the night.
Finally, the Wildcats took on Northern League opponent Saint Joseph’s Catholic on the Wolfpack pitch and fell, 2-3. Morgan scored a goal assisted by Womer, and later in the second half, Myers had his chance too to score solo. Overall, Greenwood had eleven tries on the goal, and Joya held down the goal with six saves.
The next game for Greenwood was yesterday, Sept. 8, against Tri-Valley High School on the Wildcat turf. Game stats and other information will be featured in the next update.
